Explanatory sheets
2 original explanatory sheets prepared for this pick, each with its own diagram. Codes in square brackets such as [T1] point to the numbered sources at the end of the page.
Crystal, light and a programmable surface
A named generation. The Constellation Ball was unveiled on November 24, 2025. The official fact sheet gives an overall diameter of 12.5 feet and 5,280 crystals. This sheet identifies that generation rather than combining specifications from several older Balls. [T2]
Crystals form the visible surface. Its circular crystals replace the triangular form introduced in 1999. Approximate diameters are 1.5, 3 and 4 inches. The enlarged circles compare sizes only; the actual decorative cut designs are not copied. [T2]
Light is electronically controlled. Programmable LED light pucks create changing displays. The official description also notes audio-reactive capability. The functional arrows explain what controls what, not how to assemble or power the system. [T2]
Changing light, stable signal. Color and pattern can vary while the familiar spherical outline remains recognizable. This gives the countdown a changing visual surface around a stable public time signal. The diagram separates optical appearance from the movement of the whole Ball. [T2, T3]
Educational overview only: no structural dimensions beyond published overall size, load calculations, rigging, electrical specifications or construction instructions.
Changing materials around the same midnight signal
Small circles distinguish selected changes, not every version or alteration. Their sizes are not physical scale models; the lower strip explains clock timing rather than a mechanical descent path.
Celebration before the Ball. Times Square New Year’s Eve gatherings began in 1904; the first Ball descent occurred in 1907, welcoming 1908. The original used iron and wood with electric bulbs. Later versions changed the materials without abandoning the midnight signal. [T1, T3]
Material and lighting milestones. Wrought iron followed in 1920 and aluminum in 1955. Crystal arrived for the 1999–2000 celebration; LED lighting marked the 2007 centennial. The larger Big Ball appeared in December 2008, before the 2025 Constellation generation. [T1, T2]
A tradition with an interruption. The Ball descent was suspended in 1942 and 1943 during wartime lighting restrictions. The official history describes gatherings with silence and chimes instead. “Every year since 1907” therefore needs that important qualification. [T1]
The final minute supplies the drama. At 11:59 p.m. on December 31, the descent begins; midnight marks the new year. A large visible object makes the passing minute legible to a shared audience. This sheet does not repeat an unverified audience or crowd-size figure. [T3]
The illustrations are newly drawn educational symbols, not documentary scenes, exact design reproductions or an engineering guide.
