Four disciplines within a wider Balinese Hindu cycle
A Saka New Year observance. Nyepi is a Hindu observance associated with the Saka New Year, especially prominent in Bali. Its quiet day is part of a larger religious cycle, not a statement that all of Indonesia observes one identical practice. [N1]
The four disciplines. Catur Brata Penyepian concerns fire and light, work, travel and entertainment. Withdrawing from these ordinary activities creates time for inward attention. The four labeled panels separate the disciplines rather than reducing them to silence alone. [N1]
Before and after the quiet day. The official sequence names Melasti, Pangrupukan, Nyepi or Sipeng, and Ngembak Geni. Ogoh-ogoh processions can accompany the eve’s observances; they are distinct from the day of quiet itself. Local forms and arrangements differ. [N1, N2]
A dated public example. Bali’s 2026 notice specified March 19 at 06:00 WITA through March 20 at 06:00 WITA for transport and broadcasting restrictions. It also retained emergency communication provisions. Public arrangements are therefore more precise than “everything stops.” [N2]
The 2026 dates are a documented example, not a future travel schedule. No effigy, pyrotechnic or ritual-performance instructions are supplied.
