People, a galley and a day that continues into the halls
The Jarl has a particular role. The Guizer Jarl is the chief guizer and leader of the Viking-themed Jarl Squad. Other squads take part in varied fancy dress. “Everyone dresses as a Viking” misses this important distinction. [U2, U4]
Daytime is part of the festival. The official account includes a civic reception and visits to schools, hospital, care homes and museum. The event is therefore also a network of local encounters, not only an evening spectacle. [U3]
A procession with a focal object. The galley accompanies the Jarl Squad and becomes the focal point of the evening burning. The public event has designated arrangements and a restricted burning site; the drawing shows no fire procedure. [U3]
Halls carry the celebration onward. Squads perform in halls, where hosts and volunteers contribute to the night. Costume planning and community preparation connect the short public procession with a much longer period of shared work. [U2, U4]
Lerwick’s event is held on the last Tuesday in January. Other Shetland celebrations differ. No torch, fuel or stunt instructions are included. [U4]
Norse themes within a modern, changing civic tradition
An evidence-based sequence of selected changes, not a claim that every modern feature dates to one founding year. No ancient ceremony or historical scene is invented.
Not an unchanged Viking rite. The committee’s history describes Up Helly Aa as relatively modern. Reforms around 1870 developed the name, guizing and organized procession from earlier winter festivities. [U1]
The theme arrived in stages. Viking themes appeared in 1877; the galley followed in the late 1880s. The title Guizer Jarl arrived in 1906. These elements were not all present at the beginning. [U1]
Making renews the appearance. The Jarl Squad develops its own annual costume, while parts of the Jarl’s official outfit pass to the next holder. Reuse and new design coexist within the festival. [U2]
Participation also changes. For the first time in 2023, Lerwick squads operated without gender restrictions. A living tradition can retain recognizable forms while changing who participates and how it is organized. [U1]
Dates follow the organizer’s historical account. “1880” in the retained source record is not treated as the single origin of every component.
