History and context
Shashmaqom is a classical Central Asian tradition joining sung poetry with instrumental and rhythmic organization. Its name refers to six maqoms. UNESCO identifies its historical region with places now in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and describes ensembles including lutes, fiddles, frame drums and flutes. The written score does not fully capture its interpretive detail, so teaching from master to pupil is central. Performers have also carried the tradition into diaspora communities, including Israel and the United States. This selection preserves a musical world that crosses modern borders and cannot be understood only by reading notes on a page or assigning it to one national label.

Curatorial interpretation: The gap between notation and performance reveals how much knowledge lives in demonstration, listening and memory.
Limits and cultural context
A shared regional tradition contains local styles; conservatory versions are not the only historical models.
