History and context
Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land is often heard as an affirmation of belonging, but its versions do not all say the same thing. The Library of Congress essay explains that verses concerning property and poverty were omitted from some familiar releases. The selected 1944 recording included the property verse, while other recorded versions differed. This makes the song valuable as an example of cultural editing: what people remember as a shared national song may be a shortened or softened form. An archive should preserve the identity of a version rather than silently merging several performances and texts into one supposedly stable object.
What future readers can learn
Curatorial interpretation: Omission can change a song’s politics even when its most familiar melody and refrain remain.
