History and context
Brandon used a networked artwork to investigate gender, violence and the relationship between online identity and embodied life. The Guggenheim’s account connects Shu Lea Cheang’s project with the life and murder of Brandon Teena, and describes a combination of web pages, discussion spaces and events that crossed between physical venues and the Internet. This selection preserves the network as a social and artistic setting rather than merely a delivery channel for finished images. Future viewers can ask how participation changes a work’s boundaries, and what remains when once-live conversations become historical traces. The work also demands care: remembering an individual through art should not reduce that person to the violence inflicted on him or turn traumatic material into spectacle.
What future readers can learn
