Overview

The Mid-Atlantic Apiculture Research and Extension Consortium (MAAREC) is a research-based organization focused on improving the management of honey bees in the Mid-Atlantic region. MAAREC's mission is to provide timely, relevant, and unbiased information to beekeepers, researchers, and other stakeholders through a collaborative approach.

History

Established in 1999, MAAREC is one of the original regional consortia formed under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture's (NIFA) Specialty Crops Research Initiative. Since its inception, MAAREC has been working to advance apiculture research and extension programs in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Objectives

MAAREC's primary objectives are:

  • Research: Conduct research on honey bee biology, management practices, and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
  • Extension: Provide education and outreach services to beekeepers, farmers, and other stakeholders through workshops, webinars, and publications.
  • Collaboration: Foster partnerships between universities, government agencies, and industry partners to leverage resources and expertise.

Research Focus Areas

MAAREC's research focus areas include:

Honey Bee Health

  • Colony management and productivity
  • Varroa mite infestation and disease management
  • Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies

Pollinator Health

  • Pollinator conservation and habitat restoration
  • Plant-pollinator interactions and mutualisms
  • Pollinator-friendly practices for farmers and beekeepers

Apiculture Technology

  • Beekeeping best practices and equipment innovations
  • Hive monitoring and management technologies
  • Data analytics and decision support systems for beekeepers

Extension Programs

MAAREC offers a range of extension programs, including:

Beekeeper Training

  • Workshops and webinars on bee management and IPM strategies
  • Online courses and certification programs for beekeepers

Farmers and Landowners*

  • Pollinator-friendly practices and habitat restoration guidance
  • Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for farmers

Partnerships and Collaborations

MAAREC collaborates with various organizations, including:

  • University of Maryland Extension
  • Pennsylvania State University Extension
  • USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)
  • Beekeepers Association of the Mid-Atlantic Region

Impact

MAAREC's research and extension programs have contributed to improved honey bee health, increased pollinator conservation efforts, and enhanced apiculture practices in the Mid-Atlantic region. By leveraging partnerships and collaborations, MAAREC aims to continue its mission of advancing apiculture research and education.

Future Directions

As concerns about pollinator decline and climate change grow, MAAREC will focus on:

  • Developing data-driven decision support systems for beekeepers
  • Expanding pollinator conservation efforts through habitat restoration and plant-pollinator interactions research
  • Enhancing apiculture technology innovations, including hive monitoring and management tools.
