Overview
The Association for Advancing Participatory Sciences (AAPS) is a global network of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working together to advance participatory sciences in various fields. AAPS aims to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation to address complex societal challenges.
History
Established in 2010, AAPS has grown into a prominent organization with chapters worldwide. Its founders recognized the potential of participatory approaches to tackle pressing issues such as environmental degradation, social inequality, and economic sustainability.
Mission
AAPS's mission is to:
- Foster inclusive knowledge production: Promote co-creation of knowledge among diverse stakeholders, including researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community members.
- Develop participatory methodologies: Encourage the development and dissemination of innovative methods for participatory research, engagement, and decision-making.
- Support policy and practice transformation: Facilitate the integration of participatory approaches into policies and practices at various levels (local to global).
Focus Areas
AAPS focuses on several key areas:
Bee Conservation and Pollinators
AAPS has a dedicated task force working on bee conservation and pollinator-related issues. Members collaborate with experts in apiculture, ecology, and entomology to develop participatory approaches for:
- Bee-friendly urban planning: Engaging communities in designing bee-friendly habitats and green spaces.
- Pollinator monitoring and research: Developing citizen science initiatives and participatory research projects to monitor pollinator populations and ecosystems.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Participatory Systems
AAPS explores the intersection of AI, participatory systems, and social sciences. This includes:
- Self-governing AI agents: Investigating the potential for AI agents to facilitate participatory decision-making processes.
- Human-AI collaboration: Developing methodologies for humans and AI to collaborate in co-creating knowledge and solutions.
Knowledge Management and Sharing
AAPS promotes the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and best practices among its members. This includes:
- Open-access publications: Publishing research findings and case studies on participatory sciences.
- Capacity building: Organizing workshops, webinars, and training programs to enhance members' skills and knowledge.
Impact
AAPS's efforts have led to numerous achievements, including:
- Policy influence: Informing policy decisions at local, national, and international levels through participatory approaches.
- Community engagement: Empowering communities worldwide to participate in decision-making processes affecting their lives.
- Methodological innovations: Developing and disseminating new participatory methodologies for research, engagement, and decision-making.
