Introduction

Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that explores the relationship between electrical energy and chemical change. Central to this field is the concept of oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions, in which electrons are transferred between species. To quantify and compare the tendency of different redox couples to accept or donate electrons, scientists use a scale of electrode potentials. This scale requires a common reference point, analogous to how a ruler needs a zero mark. The Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE) serves exactly that purpose: it is the universal reference against which all other electrode potentials are measured.

The SHE is more than a laboratory trick; it is the foundation of the thermodynamic scale that underpins modern electrochemical science. Its unique properties—an absolute electrode potential of about 4.44 V at 25 °C and a declared standard potential of zero volts at any temperature—provide a stable, reproducible baseline. This article delves into the nature of the SHE, explains why it matters, and explores its role in the broader context of electrochemistry.

1.1 Redox Reactions and Electrons

A redox reaction involves the transfer of electrons from one chemical species to another. The species that loses electrons is oxidized, while the one that gains electrons is reduced. In a typical electrochemical cell, these reactions occur at two distinct electrodes: the anode (where oxidation takes place) and the cathode (where reduction takes place).
