When drafting an essay, you often find yourself torn between two different introductory approaches. One might be provocative and broad, while the other is precise and academic. Instead of asking an AI which one sounds better or more fluid, you should direct the tool to analyze the structural promises made to the reader. The goal is to determine which opening establishes a clearer topic and a more manageable scope, ensuring the foundation of your argument is sound before you commit to the rest of the draft.

Prompting for Structural Analysis

To get a useful comparison, your prompt must explicitly forbid the AI from commenting on prose quality, vocabulary, or flow. Instead, instruct it to identify the primary claim and the specific boundaries of the discussion. A useful prompt might be: Analyze these two essay openings. For each, identify the promised central topic and the specific scope of the supporting evidence. Compare them based on which one provides a more concrete roadmap for the reader, ignoring stylistic preferences.

Hypothetical example

Imagine you are writing about urban gardening. Opening A says: Urban gardening is a revolution changing how we eat and live in cities across the globe. It addresses hunger and brings people together. Opening B says: The rise of community gardens in Detroit illustrates a shift toward local food sovereignty. This essay examines how these gardens reduce food deserts in three specific neighborhoods.

The AI output would look like this: Opening A promises a global discussion on sociology and nutrition, which may be too broad to support. Opening B promises a localized study of Detroit with a specific focus on food deserts, creating a manageable and defined scope.

Verifying the Scope Alignment

The most difficult case occurs when an opening is enticing but makes a promise the writer cannot realistically fulfill. If the AI suggests that a broad opening is superior because it feels inclusive, you must challenge that result. Check if the promised scope matches your available research. If your opening promises a global analysis but your notes only cover one city, the AI has flagged a structural misalignment.

To verify the final deliverable, read the AI's summary of your promised topic and ask yourself if you can actually prove every claim mentioned in that summary within your page limit. If the AI identifies a promise in your text that you did not intend to make, you must rewrite the opening to narrow the scope.
