Human interaction with dry forests has historically been intensive, with local communities relying on them for timber, fuelwood, and non-timber forest products (e.g., fruits, medicinal plants). Traditional agroforestry systems, such as milpa farming in Mesoamerica, integrate forest resources with crop cultivation, sustaining biodiversity while meeting subsistence needs. However, unsustainable logging, land conversion for cattle ranching, and expansion of monoculture crops (e.g., soybeans in Brazil) have led to widespread degradation.

Threats and Conservation

Tropical dry forests are among the most endangered ecosystems, with over 70% of their original cover lost in some regions.
