Arsenic (As) is a chemical element with atomic number 33 and an atomic weight of approximately 74.92 g/mol. It occupies group 15 of the periodic table, alongside nitrogen, phosphorus, and bismuth. Arsenic is a metalloid, exhibiting properties intermediate between metals and nonmetals. Its most stable form at room temperature is gray arsenic, a brittle, silver-white solid with a metallic luster and a complex, layered crystalline structure. Two less common allotropic forms are yellow arsenic, a nonmetallic, waxy solid that is metastable and highly reactive, and black arsenic, which resembles black phosphorus in structure and stability.

Arsenic is a poor conductor of electricity in its elemental form but demonstrates semiconducting properties when doped. It reacts with oxygen to form oxides such as arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃) and arsenic pentoxide (As₂O₅), and with halogens to produce halides like arsenic trichloride (AsCl₃). In aqueous solutions, it forms oxyanions such as arsenite (AsO₃³⁻) and arsenate (AsO₄³⁻). Arsenic compounds vary widely in toxicity, with inorganic species like arsenite being more hazardous than organic derivatives such as arsenobetaine, found in marine organisms.

History and Discovery

Arsenic compounds have been known since antiquity, with references to realgar (AsS) and orpiment (As₂S₃) in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Chinese texts. These minerals were used as pigments, insecticides, and medicinal agents. The element itself was first isolated in its metallic form by the German alchemist Albertus Magnus around 1250 CE, though this claim remains debated. By the 17th century, arsenic trioxide was synthesized and used as a pesticide and poison. The discovery of elemental arsenic was later credited to the Swedish chemist Johan Gottlieb Gahn in 1783, who reduced arsenic trioxide with carbon.

Arsenic’s notoriety as a poison earned it the moniker “the king of poisons and the poison of kings” due to its use in assassinations and its difficulty in detection. However, its applications in science and industry expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in semiconductor technology and materials science.

Occurrence and Production

Arsenic is relatively abundant in Earth’s crust, with an average concentration of about 1.5–2.0 mg/kg. It occurs naturally in sulfide minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS), realgar, and orpiment. These minerals often co-occur with gold, copper, and lead deposits. Substantial arsenic is also released into the environment through volcanic activity and weathering of arsenic-rich rocks.

Industrially, arsenic is primarily recovered as a byproduct of smelting copper, lead, and gold ores. The process involves roasting arsenic-containing sulfide ores to produce arsenic trioxide, which is then reduced with carbon to yield metallic arsenic. Approximately 50,000 tonnes of arsenic are produced annually worldwide. Environmental concerns arise from arsenic contamination in groundwater, particularly in regions such as Bangladesh, West Bengal, and parts of Latin America, where natural geologic processes mobilize the element into drinking water.
